The story takes place on Larksoken, a fictional headland community on the Norfolk coast, where Commander Adam Dalgliesh is visiting to settle his aunt’s estate. However, Dalgliesh soon finds himself drawn into the lives of the locals when he discovers that a serial killer known as the Whistler is terrorizing the area, and that he may not be the only murderer at work.
