Sean Willentz with his book, Bob Dylan in America

Sean Wilentz, one of the nation’s most respected historians, brings his acclaimed book Bob Dylan in America to Boca Grande for a lecture that explores the cultural and historical forces behind Dylan’s music. Drawing on rare studio tapes, private archives, and his work as historian for Dylan’s official website, Wilentz reveals how politics, literature, and American musical traditions shaped Dylan’s revolutionary sound.

In Bob Dylan in America, Wilentz traces Dylan’s creative path through the historical currents that influenced him, from Popular Front politics and Beat poetry to the folk revival and postwar dissent. He offers new perspective on landmark albums such as Blonde on Blonde, showing how Dylan’s work both reflected and transformed the American story. Raised in Greenwich Village, Wilentz first encountered Dylan’s music as a teenager and later returned to it as both scholar and fan. The book combines this personal connection with meticulous scholarship, creating a portrait of Dylan that is both authentic and deeply insightful.

This event will also feature a screening of the new biopic A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet as the young Dylan. While the film focuses on Dylan’s early career, Wilentz will use the broader framework of his book to place those years within the full sweep of Dylan’s artistry and the traditions that shaped him. Reflecting on the project, Wilentz remarked, “The facts are all true, the songs are all true. But none of it happened the way that the film depicts it.”

Wilentz is the George Henry Davis 1886 Professor of American History at Princeton University and the author of numerous prize winning works on American politics and culture.
