Ancient Greece: Art, Science, and War
Tuesday, February 28 | 4:30pm | Auditorium
Nigel McGilchrist Historian, Author, and International Travel Guide
Ancient Greece… how is it relevant to us today? Do we see the dangers and dilemmas which we face in the confrontation with Russia over Ukraine when we look at the Great War between Athens and Sparta? Nigel McGilchrist, Oxford-educated writer and historian has lived, worked and taught in the Mediterranean area for the last 40-years, publishing over 20 books on the ancient world and related subjects. His latest book, When the Dog Speaks, the Philosopher Listens is a transformative study of the age and mind of Pythagoras, and of its importance for us today. Drawing upon the West’s first and most thoughtful historians, McGilchrist reveals valuable lessons for us about negotiation, escalation, and the imagined “inevitability” of war in Thucydides’s analysis of a world-shaking confrontation which happened 2,400 years ago. Now bringing us to modern day, ideas about politics and government which first formulated in ancient Greece, are still alive and fiercely debated today.
About the Speaker
For over forty years, Nigel McGilchrist has lived, worked, and taught in the Mediterranean area. His love of the Greek World began when he started learning Ancient Greek in school at the age of eleven, and it was further nurtured while studying at Winchester College, and then at Merton College, Oxford.
After graduating, McGilchrist left England and became acquainted with the Near East, Syria and Egypt, as well as the serenity of Islamic art and architecture. He eventually settled in Italy and began teaching at the University of Rome and worked for the Italian Ministry of Arts, in the field of conservation of wall paintings in Umbria.
He has also worked for periods in Greece, Turkey, and Egypt; but currently only lectures in Europe and the United States. He has written the Blue Guide for the Greek Islands and in July 2022 saw the publication of another book, When the Dog speaks, the Philosopher listens, about the fascinating world, mind and influence of Pythagoras.
