A Tribute to the Buena Vista Social Club with Cortadito

Cortadito is a Miami-based Cuban ensemble, bringing jazz-infused energy to the vibrant rhythms of Cuban son, a two-century-old style from Cuba’s Oriente province. Their sound, reminiscent of the famed Buena Vista Social Club, blends traditional son with Afro-Cuban rhythms and contemporary jazz influences, connecting the music’s rich history to today’s audiences.

Founded in 2011 by Jose Elias and Julio Cesar Rodriguez Delet, the group quickly earned acclaim for creating a big band sound with a small lineup. They’ve shared the stage with Grammy-winning singer Aymeé Nuviola, flutist Nestor Torres, and Buena Vista Social Club legend Eliades Ochoa, and performed at the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage for Hispanic Heritage Month in 2022.

Cortadito’s discography includes Abriendo Caminos (2012), Canciones de Julio (2018), and The Guajiro Triangle (2025), featuring nine original songs celebrating Cuban musical traditions. The current lineup includes Alberto Pantaleon (bass), Tony Perigo (trumpet), and percussionist Santiago “El Pulpo” McCook, whose multi-percussion setup allows him to play the role of five musicians in one.
