In 1927, Louise du Pont Crowninshield donated the land that now houses the Community Center to the Lee County Board of Education for a K–12 school. After the school closed in 1965, the buildings sat vacant until 1976, when island residents, led by Gasparilla Island Conservation and Improvement Association (GICIA) and the Woman’s Club, raised funds to restore the campus. Lee County Parks & Recreation then assumed management as a public park.
Working alongside the new Parks & Recreation supervisor and island resident Delorese “Dee” Wheeler, those residents launched youth activities, holiday festivals, after-school and preschool programs, and a children’s reference room for homework assistance, now part of the Johann Fust Library. In October 1986, Friends of Boca Grande Community Center formed to supplement county programming, strengthen on-island management, and expand cultural and educational offerings.
Over the decades, Friends helped modernize facilities, elevate performances with professional production, and add livestreaming and digital access, investments that sustained programming during the pandemic and positioned the Center for growth. After Hurricane Ian in 2022, Friends and Lee County entered a first-of-its-kind development agreement empowering Friends to raise designated funds, manage contracts, coordinate with fellow leaseholders and 34 nonprofits on campus, and oversee construction and build a new theater in the County-owned park. Following additional flooding from Hurricanes Milton and Helene, the scope expanded to repair damage and harden the entire campus for future resilience. The campaign to fund long-term mitigation is in its final stage, and the project remains on budget and on schedule.
Today, Friends of Boca Grande delivers a season of shared experiences that bring our island together; distinguished lectures, immersive concert brands (All That Jazz, Rhythm & Boots, Boca Grande Live), study groups, Sleuths, Great Art on Screen, community celebrations, and highly popular cultural travel from curated day trips to multi-day explorations. Our lecture stage regularly welcomes an extraordinary roster of Pulitzer Prize–winning speakers, and the Boca Grande Film Festival has become a resounding centerpiece of the season. Friends@Home extends access with live-streamed talks, an on-demand library, and personal tech help. Volunteers are the heart of the experience, serving as greeters, ushers, and guest services, while Grande Sponsors help sustain quality and access. In partnership with Lee County Parks & Recreation, we continue to innovate and build community through the joy of learning, music, and discovery, together.
